The Reality of Public Health Insurance
Numbers That Matter
Why high earners are structurally punished by the public system — and the numbers you need to know for 2026.
Annual gross income required to be eligible for private health insurance as an employee in Germany.
Based on the new assessment ceiling (€5,812.50) and rising health/care rates. This is what you lose to public insurance every month.
Public health insurance builds zero individual reserves. Your future premiums depend entirely on future politics.

What most people don't see
Systemic Incentives →
Most insurance platforms maximize conversion, not clarity. We prioritize the structural integrity of your contract over a quick signature.
Employer Contribution Leverage →
Your employer covers exactly 50% of your PKV premium (up to the GKV maximum limit). A high-end private policy often costs you the exact same out-of-pocket as subpar public coverage.
Long-Term Calculus →
A "cheap" entry premium today is meaningless without aging reserves (Alterungsrückstellungen). We strategically structure your policy so your premiums remain stable when you retire.
Legal Security for Life →
In PKV, your contract is your law. Unlike GKV, where benefits are regularly reduced by politicians facing budget deficits, your PKV benefits are guaranteed for life.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything You Need to Know
When can an employee switch to private health insurance?
You can switch if your gross annual income exceeds the JAEG threshold of €77,400 (2026). If you start a new job above this threshold, you can switch immediately. If you receive a raise, you can switch on January 1st of the following year — provided your income will also exceed next year's threshold.
Does my employer contribute to my PKV premiums?
Yes. Your employer covers 50% of your monthly premium, up to a maximum of half the maximum GKV contribution. This employer subsidy applies regardless of which private insurer you choose, heavily subsidizing premium PKV tariffs for high earners.
Are premiums based on my income?
No. Unlike GKV, PKV premiums depend on your age at entry and your health status — not your income. A pay raise never increases your premium.
Will my premiums increase as I age?
ARAG builds aging reserves (Alterungsrückstellungen) specifically to counteract age-related cost increases. Additionally, a mandatory 10% surcharge is collected during your working years to stabilize premiums in retirement. Optional "Beitragsentlastung" modules can further reduce your contribution after age 65.
Can I switch back to GKV?
Returning to GKV is possible under specific circumstances — e.g. if your income drops below the threshold, or if you become unemployed. After age 55, returning is generally not possible. We explain the full implications during consultation.
Is my family automatically covered?
In PKV, each family member has an individual policy. There is no automatic "family insurance" as in GKV. However, children's premiums are typically low, and the overall package can be very competitive — especially for higher earners.
What makes ARAG different from other private insurers?
ARAG is the only private health insurer that includes patient legal protection at no extra cost. Additionally, ARAG offers telemedicine, health coaching, dental advisory services, mental health support, and pregnancy programs as built-in services.
Is the consultation really free?
Yes, 100% free. We are compensated by the insurer through standard commissions. Your premium is identical whether you approach ARAG directly or through our agency. There is no additional cost — ever.
